Course Description

A Mayoral Proclamation of Civil Emergency noted that:

A direct and credible threat to the welfare of members of the public experiencing homelessness to such an extent as to require me to…take extraordinary measures to prevent harm to such persons, to protect the public welfare, and to alleviate hardship and suffering (02 November 2015)

Given this unfolding drama, students were challenged to generate radical new ideas to address the city’s urgent need for affordable and emergency housing and also bring back a sense of productivity to what is becoming an upscale, consumption-focused community. A hypothetical client, Partners for Social Inclusion (PSI), empowered students to obtain departures from city codes to implement truly innovative thinking.

Students worked in teams to develop three urban designs for the site and then each student designed a building for one of the concepts.
