Course Description

This design studio explored the topic of ‘architecture and relationship’. Students were asked to consider how and why they personally relate to a given site and program, and to develop convictions regarding how and why their architectural proposals also relate to a given site and program. Students worked at both a conceptual and technical levels throughout the quarter, with a focus on conceptual work the first half of the quarter, and a focus on technical work the second half. A multitude of programmatic requirements required students to consider spatial adjacencies and structural requirements more fully from past studios, including the siting and relationship of multiple buildings that create a complex. Special attention was given to the consideration of building relationships to site components – existing structures, topography (ground), vegetation, sky.
