Course Description

This studio will focus on the site and building design of a remote mountain hut to be located high in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State.

A mountain hut is a type of lodge or rustic hotel intended for use as an overnight shelter for hikers, skiers, and mountaineers. The hut is often one of many similar structures located along a popular route through the mountains, serving as a stopover for people traveling a long distance over several days or weeks. The hut can also be used as a base camp for daily expeditions, and, if it is close enough to the trailhead, it can be a celebrated destination for lunch. There is a rich tradition of mountain huts in many parts of the world, some of which are remarkable structures offering comfortable beds and delicious food to outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. This studio will investigate the design opportunities for a single hut or a system of huts in the mountains near Seattle.
