Our Centennial

It’s hard to believe that autumn quarter is nearing an end and we’re soon heading into winter!  It’s been quite an exciting season around the UW Department of Architecture with much more still to come.

This fall we celebrated with the grand kickoff of the Architecture Centennial.   Opening activities began on October 22 with an alumni lecture by Brian Bell (B.Arch ’89), followed later in the week with displays of tectonic studio models and faculty publications, a “fireside chat” with local professionals, a Friday “Super Studio”, and an all–college alumni Happy Hour — which featured a Pecha Kucha (“pe-chak-cha”) with brief, engaging presentations from several of our notable alumni.  On Saturday, October 25, Peter Miller Books hosted a book signing reception featuring works by departmental faculty.  That evening, the celebration was taken to new heights when faculty, students, staff, alumni, and friends dressed to the nines and kicked up their heels at a spectacular, sold-out Centennial Gala at the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion.   The weekend wrapped up on Sundaywith a Capitol Hill/downtown Seattle Walking Tour led by Kate Murphy (M Arch 2013) highlighting six notable alumni designed building projects.

The Department of Architecture Centennial celebration continues all year long with upcoming lectures and exhibits.  Winter quarter begins with the grand opening of Gould Pavilion, which is currently in its final stages of construction.   This project repurposes the double height entry corridor at the east end of Gould Hall, and will include three multi-purpose galleries and a studio/classroom.  On January 14 the first gallery exhibit will feature the work of distinguished alumnus George Suyama, with a conversation between George and firm partner Jay Deguchi.  The Gould Symposium with Gene Zema, Dan Streissguth, Grant Hildebrand, and Dave Miller will be held on January 21.  The Jim Olson exhibition will open with a conversation on March 4.  Details about the Gould Pavilion ribbon-cutting ceremony will be posted soon.

We’ll be sharing more Centennial photos and stories all year long – stay tuned.  Thank you to all of our sponsors, faculty, students, staff, alumni and friends for their hard work in making these events such a success.  Here’s to the next 100 years!

Help keep the Department going strong for another 100 years: make a gift today!
