Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, FAIA
Professor
Jeffrey Karl Ochsner FAIA is a Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, where he has taught since 1988 in the areas of architectural design, urban design, historic preservation, and architectural history. He served as Chair of the Department of Architecture from 1996 to 2002. He holds adjunct positions in the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design & Planning. He began serving as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Built Environments in July 2007.
Professor Ochsner is author of H. H. Richardson: Complete Architectural Works (1982), editor and co-author of Shaping Seattle Architecture: A Historical Guide to the Architects (1994), co-author of Distant Corner: Seattle Architects and the Legacy of H. H. Richardson (2003), and author of Lionel H. Pries, Architect-Artist-Educator: From Arts & Crafts to Modern Architecture (2007). The Publishers Association of the West awarded Lionel H. Pries, Architect-Artist-Educator two medals for design; the book was a finalist for the 2008 Washington State Book Award in History/Biography. Professor Ochsner has published in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, JAE: Journal of Architectural Education, Pacific Northwest Quarterly, ARCADE and other journals.
Professor Ochsner received his education at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He is a registered architect and a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. From 1984 to 1987, he directed Ochsner Associates, his own firm in Houston. Projects included architecture, urban design, and preservation in Galveston and Houston. He currently does occasional preservation consulting, including preparing nominations to be submitted to the Landmarks Board of the City of Seattle.
Professor Ochsner served as Coordinator of the Lecture Series for the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (now College of Built Environments) from 1988 to 1996. From 1990 to 1994 he was member of the editorial board of JAE: Journal of Architectural Education. He was the Local Chair for the annual meeting of the Society of Architectural Historians in Seattle in 1995, and he served on the Board of the Society from 2000 to 2003. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Pacific Northwest Quarterly.
The Association of College Schools of Architecture selected Professor Ochsner as one of five recipients of the 2012 ACSA Distinguished Professor Award. He has twice won the College of Built Environments Lionel Pries Award for teaching excellence.
The University of Washington Press released his new book, Furniture Studio: Materials, Craft, and Architecture, in April 2012.
